D. N. Rodowick is the author of numerous essays and books: The Virtual Life of Film (Harvard University Press, 2007); Reading the Figural, or, Philosophy after the New Media (Duke University Press, 2001); Gilles Deleuze's Time Machine (Duke University Press, 1997)
In "An Elegy for Theory" D. N. Rodowick will discuss the vicissitudes of ideas of "theory" in the past twenty years in cinema and visual studies, as well as in the wider context of debates in the humanities. Put simply, to want to relinquish theory is more than a debate over epistemological standards, it is a retreat from reflection on the ethical commitments behind our styles of knowing.
