Catherine Russell is Professor at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema and Program Director of the PhD in Humanities at Concordia University. She holds a PhD in Film Studies from New York University (1990). Her publications include work on avant-garde cinema, anthropological cinema, japanese cinema and early cinema. A specialist of film theory, her recent work focuses on archive, collection and the emergence of cinephilia in filmic culture. She has receive a research grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada for the publication of a book on Naruse Mikio (forthcoming from Duke University Press).
