Though it is prominent in French film criticism, the term decoupage (unlike its corollary, mise-en-scene) effectively does not exist in English language film criticism. Timothy Barnard’s recent translation of Andre Bazin highlights the importance of this concept, and Otto Preminger’s Bonjour Tristesse offers an example of the subtleties and complexities of an expressive decoupage in practice.
Christian Keathley is Associate Professor in the Film & Media Culture Department at Middlebury College. He is the author of Cinephilia and History, or The Wind in the Trees (Indiana UP, 2005), and he is currently at work on a book entitled The Mystery of Otto Preminger.
